Be careful when googling for tech help online

deceptive marketing article

Last week I came across someone else who had fallen victim to what I regard as unscrupulous marketing practice. She was having trouble installing security software from F-Secure (-recommended by her Internet Service Provider, Virginmedia). She searched for help online but what she thought was F-Secure support was really a 3rd party website, which made sure it came up whenever anyone used certain keywords to search for help with F-Secure and the likes. They talked her into remotely connecting to her computer and allowing them to install security software and proceeded to charge her £300! Fortunately she was able to stop the payment via her credit card company but the experience has shaken her confidence. So, proceed with caution when searching for help online and check you’ve found the right website!
